Where it came from
Taste of Death was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed with a heavy thematic emphasis on Arthurian legend and fairy tale motifs, aiming to evoke a whimsical yet dark aesthetic. This card specifically reflects the set’s mechanics regarding food tokens and sacrifice, capturing the macabre intersection of high-fantasy storytelling and strategic resource management common to the game's black mana color identity.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who is known for his atmospheric contributions to the game's expansive visual landscape. His design for this piece focuses on the unsettling juxtaposition of a traditional banquet setting with the grim consequences of the spell. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, if situational, removal tool that fit well into the limited environments of the set, praised by players for how effectively its art and mechanics reinforced the darker fairy tale narrative.
