Where it came from
Taste of Death was released in 2021 as part of the Commander 2021 set, specifically featured in the Silverquill Statement deck. This expansion drew inspiration from the Strixhaven: School of Mages thematic setting, focusing on the five prestigious colleges of the university. The card was designed to reflect the political and manipulative nature of the Silverquill house, which emphasizes social maneuvering and the mastery of black and white mana to control the battlefield.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a dramatic, high-contrast style typical of the Strixhaven aesthetic. The design aims to capture the essence of a 'black board wipe' effect, combining visceral imagery with the mechanical requirement of sacrificing creatures to balance the card's powerful impact on the game state. Upon its release, it was noted by players as a flexible utility card for multiplayer formats, favored for its ability to clear the board while providing additional resource benefits.
