Taurean Mauler

Taurean Mauler was originally printed in the Lorwyn expansion in 2007, reflecting the set's tribal focus on changelings—creatures that possess all creature types simultaneously. As a shapeshifter, the card was designed to scale in power based on the frequency of spells cast by opponents, rewarding players for interacting with a multiplayer landscape. Its mechanical identity as a growable threat made it a staple in casual formats, leading to its inclusion in the Commander 2016 preconstructed decks.

The art for the card, illustrated by Kev Walker, emphasizes the creature's monstrous and unstable physiology, which is consistent with the visual language of the Lorwyn block's darker, more volatile aesthetic. The illustration depicts a creature in mid-transformation, capturing the erratic nature of a beast that adapts to the pressure of its environment. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its ability to punish opponents for playing the game, securing its position as a persistent presence in Commander deckbuilding.
