Where it came from
Teferi's Imp was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was notable for being the first to be designed as a block, emphasizing a cohesive aesthetic and mechanical theme inspired by African folklore and high fantasy. The Imp was designed as a black creature card featuring the phasing ability, a complex mechanic introduced in this set that allowed cards to temporarily leave and re-enter play, reflecting the shifting, unstable nature of the character Teferi.
The card features artwork by Margaret Organ-Kean, who contributed several pieces to the Mirage set. Her illustration captures the creature's ethereal and mischievous quality, fitting the thematic tone of the expansion. Upon its release, Mirage was well-received by players for its flavorful design and strategic depth, and while Teferi's Imp remained a niche card, it is recognized by long-time collectors as a representative example of the visual and mechanical evolution of the game during the mid-1990s.
