Where it came from
Teferi's Honor Guard was released in the 1997 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Visions. The set was designed to complement the preceding Mirage expansion, focusing on the lore of the continent of Jamuraa and the character Teferi, a powerful mage whose influence on the timeline serves as a recurring theme in the game's mythos. The card represents the magical defenders serving Teferi, reflecting the high-fantasy aesthetic and tactical design language common to mid-nineties Magic sets.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Randy Elliott, who contributed several pieces to the Visions set. The illustration style is characteristic of the era, utilizing a gritty, hand-painted aesthetic that emphasizes the lore-heavy atmosphere Wizards of the Coast was cultivating at the time. Upon release, the card was received as a functional addition to white-aligned defensive strategies, valued by players for its ability to protect the board during a time when creature combat was central to the game's meta.
