Teferi's Puzzle Box

Teferi's Puzzle Box first appeared in the Visions expansion in 1997, designed to introduce complex, hand-disrupting gameplay mechanics to Magic: The Gathering. As an artifact representing a chronomantic device belonging to the planeswalker Teferi, the card forces players to shuffle their hands into their libraries at the end of each turn, only to draw an equal number of new cards. This design creates a state of constant flux, challenging players to manage resources that are never stable, which made it a quintessential tool for combo and control decks.

The Ninth Edition printing features artwork by Donato Giancola, a renowned fantasy illustrator known for his ability to translate abstract magical concepts into tangible, painterly imagery. For this iteration, Giancola leaned into a clockwork, arcane aesthetic that emphasizes the chaotic nature of the artifact. Within the community, the card is remembered for its distinct disruptive potential, often utilized to lock opponents out of their strategies or to cycle through deck compositions rapidly, cementing its legacy as a high-impact rare in the history of the game.
