Teferi's Puzzle Box

Teferi's Puzzle Box first appeared in the 1997 Visions expansion, designed by Mark Rosewater. It was conceptualized as a chaotic artifact intended to disrupt deck consistency by forcing players to constantly cycle their hands, reflecting the time-warping nature of the character Teferi. The mechanical implementation—setting aside one's hand and drawing a new one every turn—has remained a hallmark of red-blue chaos strategies in the Commander format.

The Ninth Edition printing, featuring the artwork of Donato Giancola, brought this classic design into the modern era of the game. Giancola’s illustration emphasizes the intricate, shifting geometry of the puzzle box itself, capturing the arcane mystery of the card’s effect.
