Where it came from
Teferi's Tutelage was introduced in the 2021 Core Set for Magic: The Gathering, designed as an enchantment that reflects the blue-aligned strategy of drawing cards to overwhelm an opponent. The card features artwork by Magali Villeneuve, who chose to depict the iconic planeswalker Teferi in a mentorship role, emphasizing his mastery over time and wisdom. The illustration captures a contemplative, scholarly atmosphere that grounds the card's mechanical function of 'milling'—forcing an opponent to discard their library—within the lore of Teferi’s pedagogical journey.
Upon release, the card quickly became a staple in limited formats and casual play, praised for its efficient cost and synergy with blue deck strategies. Players responded positively to its ability to create a clear win condition through card draw, and it is frequently cited by collectors for Villeneuve’s evocative character work. The card serves as a testament to the design philosophy of the Core Set 2021, which aimed to highlight the narrative depth of core planeswalkers through interactive and theme-focused gameplay mechanics.
