Where it came from
Temple Bell was originally introduced in the 2009 set Conflux and was subsequently reprinted as part of the Power Hungry deck in the Commander 2013 product line. Designed as an artifact that allows all players to draw a card, it functions as a classic group-hug mechanic intended to accelerate gameplay and foster a more social, interactive board state. The card design leans into the thematic aesthetic of a serene, resonant instrument meant to signal a shared moment of revelation for all participants in a game.
The artwork for the Commander 2013 printing was illustrated by Franz Vohwinkel, a long-standing contributor to the game. Vohwinkel chose a clean, ethereal style that highlights the temple bell's function as a communal tool, emphasizing the gold and brass tones that suggest antiquity and ritual. Upon its release, the card became a staple in the Commander format, favored by players who prefer political, non-aggressive deck strategies that encourage negotiation and mutual benefit over direct conflict.
