Where it came from
Temple Altisaur was released as a promotional card for the Rivals of Ixalan set in early 2018. The card is a member of the Dinosaur creature type, which serves as a central mechanical and thematic pillar of the Ixalan block, a setting inspired by Mesoamerican cultures and age-of-exploration adventure narratives. Wizards of the Coast utilized this specific promotional version to celebrate the set's release and to provide collectors with a distinct aesthetic variant featuring unique set symbols or foiling processes.
The illustration for the card was created by artist Zack Stella. His design captures the monumental and protective nature of the creature, emphasizing its scale and regal bearing within the dense, verdant landscapes of the plane of Ixalan. Upon its debut, the card was received as a flavorful addition to tribal Dinosaur decks, praised for its ability to reinforce the durability of its prehistoric peers on the battlefield while serving as an evocative visual representation of the set's high-fantasy scope.
