Where it came from
Temporal Trespass was released in 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged set, the second expansion in the Khans of Tarkir block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to capitalize on the set's central time-travel narrative, which depicts the planeswalker Sarkhan Vol traveling into the past to alter the destiny of the dragon spirit Ugin. Mechanically, it utilizes the 'delve' keyword—a recurring mechanic from the block that allows players to exile cards from their graveyard to reduce the mana cost of a spell, emphasizing the theme of scavenging through history.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Daarken, known for his dark and atmospheric fantasy style. His work on Temporal Trespass features a haunting, ethereal depiction of the timeline shifting, fitting the card’s identity as a powerful late-game maneuver. Upon release, the card saw immediate play in competitive formats like Modern and Legacy, where its ability to grant extra turns for a potentially low mana cost made it a potent tool for combo-oriented deck archetypes.
