Tentacle

The Tentacle token was introduced as part of the Theros Beyond Death expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in early 2020. This card is a mechanical necessity for the set, specifically generated by cards like Nadir Kraken. As with other tokens in the set, its inclusion was driven by the thematic emphasis on the Greek-mythology-inspired plane of Theros, where oceanic terrors and divine intervention are core components of the narrative landscape.

The illustration for this token was created by Greg Staples, who utilized a dark, atmospheric style to capture the creature's menacing nature. The design prioritizes a visceral, otherworldly aesthetic that fits the expansion’s focus on the Underworld and the monstrous entities lurking in the fringes of the sea. It was well-received by players for its clear artistic contribution to the gameplay experience, effectively grounding the abstract concept of a creature token within the specific visual identity of the Theros world.
