The Zombie token from the Theros Beyond Death set was introduced in early 2020 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion centered on the underworld of Theros. In the game's mechanics, tokens are auxiliary representations of creatures created by other cards, and this specific zombie was designed to support effects that return creatures from the graveyard or evoke the set's thematic preoccupation with death and the afterlife.

The artwork was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast and executed by illustrator Emrah Elmasli. Emrah sought to capture the distinct aesthetic of the Theros plane, which draws heavily from Greek mythology and heroic fantasy, by depicting a ghastly, underworld-bound figure that feels at once grounded in the game's high-fantasy setting and evocative of classic horror tropes. It was well-received by players for its atmospheric quality and clear visual distinction on the tabletop.
