Where it came from
Tentative Connection is a common sorcery card released in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering expansion set, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. The set was designed around a central theme of mutation, monstrous creatures, and human survivors adapting to a world dominated by apex predators. This card reflects that narrative by depicting a human attempting to form a bond with a wild, alien-like beast, mirroring the set's focus on the cyclical relationship between the inhabitants of Ikoria and its colossal behemoths.
The card's artwork, illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, leans into the vibrant and perilous aesthetic of the Ikoria plane. Kieryluk sought to capture the tension of the moment, utilizing the high-contrast color palette common to the set's cycle of connection-themed spells. Upon release, the card was received as a standard utility piece for limited formats, noted by players for its thematic resonance with the mechanics of the set rather than competitive dominance.
