Where it came from
The Voracious Greatshark was released in 2020 as part of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore themes of mutation, monstrous companions, and a world defined by its massive, apex creatures. As a centerpiece of the set's blue identity, the card was conceptualized to represent the predatory nature of Ikoria's oceans, utilizing the flash mechanic to surprise opponents and reinforce the theme of ambush predation.
The artwork for this card was commissioned from illustrator Lucas Graciano, who sought to capture the sheer scale and biological menace of the creature as it erupts from the depths. Graciano employed dynamic lighting and aggressive composition to emphasize the shark's bioluminescence and sharp, protruding features. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its tactical versatility in control-oriented decks, finding a firm place in the game's competitive landscape during its tenure in the Standard format.
