What it does

Flying; banding (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

"When we're aloft, I love to lean over the Weatherlight's railing and watch the patterns the griffins' shadows make on the clouds below."— Sisay, Captain of the *Weatherlight*

Provenance

Where it came from

Teremko Griffin was printed as part of The List, a rotating selection of cards from throughout Magic: The Gathering history that appear in Set Boosters. This specific card, numbered MIR-43, originated in the Mirage expansion released in 1996, which was the first set designed as a standalone block. The design team, led by Bill Rose, aimed to create a flavor-rich environment inspired by African mythology and lore, moving away from the high-fantasy tropes of earlier sets.

The card was illustrated by Anson Maddocks, a foundational artist for the game whose style is characterized by surreal, distinct creature designs. The Griffin reflects the aesthetic shift seen in Mirage, where artists were encouraged to move toward more atmospheric and painterly depictions. Upon its release, Teremko Griffin was primarily regarded as a mid-tier creature for limited play, valued more for its thematic resonance within the Mirage setting than for competitive Constructed viability.
