Provenance

Where it came from

Terminal Moraine was released in February 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed as the second installment of the Invasion block, which centered on an interdimensional war. The card reflects the set's thematic focus on environmental upheaval and the reshaping of the game's central plane, Dominaria, following the arrival of the Phyrexians.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Donato Giancola. Known for his technical precision and use of light, Giancola depicted the moraine—a landform created by the accumulation of unconsolidated glacial debris—as a rugged, desolate landscape. The design was intended to evoke the geological instability caused by the ongoing planar conflict, and it was received by players as a functional utility land that provided mana fixing during a highly tactical period of the game's competitive history.
