Where it came from
Terminate was released in early 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the collision of the Phyrexians and the forces of Rath, continuing the narrative of the Invasion block. As a common card, it was crafted to provide players with a straightforward, efficient answer to creature threats, cementing its role as a staple in black-red control strategies.
The card features an illustration by Adam Rex, who was a frequent contributor to the game during this era. Rex’s art depicts the raw, destructive nature of the spell, capturing a moment of sudden annihilation that aligns with the card’s mechanical function. Upon its release, Terminate was quickly praised by the competitive community for its versatility and mana efficiency, eventually becoming one of the most recognizable removal spells in the game's history.
