Where it came from
Terminate was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was notable for being the first in the game's history to consist entirely of multi-colored cards, reflecting the fractured 'shard' plane of Alara as it merged back together. The card represents the aggressive, destructive fusion of black and red mana, designed to serve as an efficient removal spell that prevents regeneration, fitting the visceral thematic identity of the Grixis and Jund shards.
The artwork for Terminate was commissioned from artist Greg Staples, whose work often features high-contrast, moody atmospheres characteristic of the darker color alignments in the game. His illustration captures the definitive moment of a creature's destruction, focusing on the volatile magical energy associated with the Rakdos-aligned color pair. The card was well-received by the competitive community for its streamlined utility and has since become a staple inclusion in various eternal formats like Modern, where it remains a reliable choice for decks seeking to neutralize threats.
