Where it came from
Test of Talents was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set within the multiversal university of Strixhaven, the card reflects the scholarly, competitive environment of the Prismari college, which emphasizes the fusion of elemental magic and artistic expression. Its design serves a tactical purpose in the game, functioning as an instant that disrupts an opponent's strategy by exiling a target spell and searching their library for further copies.
The artwork was illustrated by Anna Steinbauer, who rendered the card with a vibrant, painterly aesthetic characteristic of the Prismari style. The illustration captures a moment of intense magical critique, emphasizing the card's theme of evaluating and neutralizing an adversary's magical performance. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency as a sideboard tool in competitive formats, particularly for its ability to dismantle combo-oriented decks.
