Where it came from
Tethered Griffin was released in 1999 as part of Urza's Destiny, the final expansion in the Urza block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. During this period, the game was shifting toward more complex board mechanics, and this card was designed as a white creature that utilized a restrictive summoning cost to balance its power, reflecting the themes of magical binding prevalent in the set's lore.
The illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, a foundational figure in Magic's visual identity. Rush opted for a stark, focused depiction of the creature, emphasizing its metallic or magical restraints to communicate the card's namesake ability. Upon release, it was viewed as a niche utility card, often utilized in specific draft environments where its interaction with enchantment-heavy decks could provide a strategic advantage.
