Where it came from
Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas was introduced in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering set Mirrodin Besieged. It depicts the titular artificer during his service to the elder dragon Nicol Bolas, capturing his role as a manipulative planeswalker orchestrating the Phyrexian invasion of Mirrodin. The card was designed to highlight Tezzeret's affinity for artifacts, featuring abilities that manipulate and capitalize on the heavy artifact density characteristic of the block.
The card’s illustration was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific fantasy artist known for his cinematic and moody character portraits. Briclot’s design emphasizes Tezzeret’s signature etherium arm and his cold, calculating demeanor, utilizing a color palette of deep blues and teals to match the character’s alignment with blue and black mana. Upon release, the card was immediately recognized for its high power level in competitive formats, particularly for its ability to stabilize board states and provide consistent card advantage.
