Where it came from
Thalia's Lancers was released as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2016. The card was designed to support the set's themes of horror and defensive mobilization within the world of Innistrad, specifically focusing on the character Thalia as she leads her forces against the encroaching Eldrazi threat. The promo version, marked with the set's expansion symbol and a star, was distributed through various organized play channels to incentivize participation in the set's debut.
The artwork for this specific card was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast, intended to showcase a sense of regal authority and martial readiness. Artists working within the Eldritch Moon cycle were generally tasked with balancing the gothic aesthetic of the plane with the alien, cosmic horror elements introduced by the Eldrazi. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its utility in searching for powerful legendary permanents, securing its place in various formats.
