Where it came from
Thalia's Lancers was released as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering in July 2016. The card was designed as a rare creature intended to bridge the narrative of the block, representing the Cathar hero Thalia leading her soldiers against the encroaching corruption of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul. The '47s' designation indicates this version is a promotional printing, specifically distributed through Wizards of the Coast's organized play programs to reward tournament participants during the set's release window.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Magali Villeneuve, who is well-regarded for her work within the fantasy genre. Villeneuve utilized a dramatic, low-angle perspective to emphasize the authority and resolve of the titular character, Thalia, amidst the chaos of battle. The design choices aimed to capture the desperate, gothic horror aesthetic of the Innistrad plane while maintaining the high-fantasy clarity expected of competitive gameplay cards.
