Provenance

Where it came from

Thallid was released in 1994 as part of the Fallen Empires expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore the sociopolitical conflict on the plane of Dominaria, focusing on the isolated subterranean city-state of Sarpadia and its desperate reliance on thrulls and fungi-based organisms to survive the collapse of the Order of Leitbur.

The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a central figure in the early visual identity of the game. Hoover’s design leaned into the macabre, surreal aesthetic typical of the era, depicting the Thallid as a sentient, spore-releasing plant creature. While Fallen Empires was initially criticized for its lower power level compared to preceding sets, the Thallid became an iconic symbol of the expansion’s flavor-first approach to card design.
