Where it came from
Vodalian Soldiers was released in 1994 as part of Fallen Empires, the sixth expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore a darker, more conflict-driven narrative set on the plane of Dominaria, specifically focusing on the brewing war between the merfolk of Vodalia and the Order of the Ebon Hand. The card itself reflects the militaristic themes prevalent in the set, depicting the defensive frontline of the Vodalian aquatic civilization.
The artwork for this specific version, cataloged as 31a, was created by illustrator Anson Maddocks. Known for his atmospheric and sometimes visceral style during the game's early years, Maddocks aimed to emphasize the stoic, armored nature of the merfolk infantry. While Fallen Empires was initially met with mixed critical reception due to its large print run and lower power level compared to earlier sets, it has since become a nostalgic touchstone for collectors, appreciated for its deep world-building and distinct aesthetic.
