Thallid Soothsayer

Thallid Soothsayer was released in the 2018 Dominaria set for Magic: The Gathering, designed to evoke the nostalgia of the plane's history while introducing new mechanical synergies. As a member of the Thallid creature type, it continues the thematic lineage of the Saproling-producing fungi that first appeared in the 1994 set Fallen Empires. The design team sought to provide players with a repeatable card-draw engine that required the sacrifice of the creatures the deck naturally generates, balancing power with the classic flavor of the Jund-aligned fungal swarms.

The artwork was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, who has contributed to the game for many years. His depiction captures the unsettling, organic aesthetic characteristic of the Thallids, focusing on the blend of plant-like structures and sentient decay. Upon release, the card was well-received by players focusing on Limited environments and casual Commander decks, where its ability to trade expendable tokens for card advantage provided a reliable resource engine for Golgari-aligned playstyles.
