Where it came from
Thassa's Intervention was released as part of the Theros Beyond Death set in January 2020, representing the manifestation of the god of the sea within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The card was designed as a modal spell, allowing players to choose between searching the library for blue cards or giving creatures -X/-X, reflecting the versatility and mercurial nature of the deity Thassa.
The promotional version, designated as collector number 72s, features the distinct 'Theros Beyond Death Promos' treatment, often characterized by unique foil surfacing or alternate border treatments intended to highlight the set's mythic themes. Illustrated by Wisnu Tan, the artwork depicts the god rising from the depths, an aesthetic choice intended to emphasize scale and aquatic power. The card was well-received by the competitive community for its utility in control archetypes, becoming a staple in various formats shortly after its introduction.
