Where it came from
Thassa's Intervention was released in early 2020 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Theros Beyond Death. This set marked a return to the Greek mythology-inspired plane of Theros, focusing on the struggle between the mortal realm and the pantheon of gods. The card represents a 'modal' spell, a design philosophy intended to offer players flexibility and strategic depth by providing two distinct choices during gameplay, reflecting the capricious nature of the sea god Thassa.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for his ethereal and painterly aesthetic. Voss was tasked with depicting Thassa, the god of the sea, exerting her influence over the waves. The artwork emphasizes the character's colossal scale and connection to the water, aligning with the set's high-fantasy themes and contributing to the visual identity of the Theros cycle.
