Where it came from
The Akroan War was released in 2020 as part of the Theros Beyond Death expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing deeply from Greek mythology, the card depicts the legendary conflict involving the city-state of Akros. Mechanically, it functions as a Saga, a narrative-driven enchantment type that progresses through three distinct chapters, mirroring the escalation of a historical battle.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Johannes Voss, who utilized a dramatic, sweeping composition to capture the chaos and heroism of the battlefield. The design intent was to translate the fluid motion of classical relief sculptures into a modern fantasy aesthetic. Upon its release, players and critics praised the card for its evocative storytelling and its clever mechanical reflection of a shifting conflict.
