Where it came from
The Akroan War was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Theros Beyond Death, a return to the Greek mythology-inspired plane of Theros. This particular card is a Saga, a specialized enchantment type designed to depict legendary myths and historical events within the game's lore. The 124s collector number denotes its status as a promo variant, often distributed through game store events or special product bundles to commemorate the release.
The artwork was created by Johannes Voss, who utilized a bold, classical aesthetic to reflect the violent, epic nature of the card's namesake conflict. By illustrating the escalating stages of a battle—from the initial charge to the final betrayal—Voss sought to capture the narrative progression inherent to the Saga mechanic. Upon release, the card was widely praised by players for its thematic resonance and its ability to turn the tide of a match by manipulating creature control.
