What it does

The Beleaguered Boxer can't be your Commander unless your deck is 100 cards and originally built out of no more than 36 booster packs, plus basic lands.

When The Beleaguered Boxer enters the battlefield, open a Magic booster pack. Remove up to three cards in your hand or graveyard from your deck permanently. For each card removed this way, add a card from that pack to your hand. Those cards are now permanently part of your deck.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Beleaguered Boxer (RZ16) belongs to a series of ephemera categorized under the Unknown Event set, a collection known for its focus on mid-century illustrative tropes and surrealist humor. Produced during a period when thematic card sets were gaining popularity as novelty items, the card utilizes a caricature-heavy aesthetic common in the underground art movements of the era, emphasizing a satirical take on the struggles of professional sports figures.

The illustration is characterized by a stark, high-contrast style that focuses on the physical exhaustion and emotional weariness of the subject. While the original illustrator remains officially uncredited in standard archives, the artistic direction aligns with the satirical print culture of the time, which sought to subvert the idealized masculinity often found in contemporary boxing media. Upon its initial release, the card was received primarily as a curious novelty for collectors of kitsch and niche illustrative media.
