Where it came from
The Black Gate, numbered 87 in The Hobbit Eternal set, was produced as part of a specialized trading card series dedicated to J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium. The card serves as a visual representation of the Morannon, the fortified entrance to the land of Mordor. It was designed to anchor the expansion’s focus on the darker geographical landmarks of Middle-earth, utilizing dark, foreboding color palettes to evoke the sense of dread associated with the gate’s role in the narrative.
The artistic direction for this entry prioritized a cinematic, high-contrast aesthetic that reflects the gate’s structural permanence and its function as a barrier between realms. Illustrators working on this set aimed to balance traditional fantasy cartography styles with the grittier, industrial depictions popularized by contemporary media adaptations. Upon its release, the card was received primarily by collectors of franchise-specific memorabilia who value the integration of narrative lore with detailed, atmospheric landscape illustration.
