Where it came from
The Black Gate was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Tales of Middle-earth' Commander set, a cross-promotional expansion that integrated J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium into the trading card game mechanics. Functioning as a non-basic land card, it was designed to represent the fortified entrance to Mordor, providing strategic utility by allowing players to goad creatures when it enters the battlefield.
The card features illustration by Wisnu Tan, who captured the imposing, desolate aesthetic of the Morannon. The visual direction emphasizes the scale and foreboding architecture described in The Lord of the Rings. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful addition to 'goad'-themed decks, appreciated by players for its thematic accuracy in recreating the strategic chaos associated with the forces of Sauron.
