Where it came from
The Brothers' War Commander set was released in November 2022 as a tie-in to the Magic: The Gathering expansion set of the same name. The set focuses on the iconic conflict between the artificer brothers Urza and Mishra, a pivotal event in the game's deep lore that originally appeared in 1998. This expansion was designed to evoke a nostalgic, retro-futuristic aesthetic, heavily leaning into the imagery of colossal war machines and magical artifacts.
Collector number 22 in this specific Commander release refers to the card titled 'Sanwell, Avenger Ace.' The card features original illustration by artist Anna Steinbauer, who utilized a clean, dynamic style to capture the character's status as a daring pilot. The set was generally well-received by the player community for its successful integration of artifact-heavy mechanics and its faithfulness to the established historical timeline of the game's long-running storyline.
