Where it came from
The Cloning of Shredder, card number 60, was released as part of the original 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trading card set produced by Topps. Emerging during the height of the series' initial explosion in popularity, the set was designed to capitalize on the success of the animated television show and the accompanying action figure line by providing fans with visual snapshots of key narrative moments.
The artwork on these cards typically repurposed cel frames from the cartoon or utilized promotional illustrations provided by Mirage Studios to ensure brand consistency. As with the broader collection, this card served as an affordable collectible for a young demographic, focusing on dramatic plot points like Shredder's experiments, which helped cement the series' mythology in the minds of collectors.
