Where it came from
The Creation of Avacyn was released as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2024. This set was designed to introduce powerful, new-to-modern cards into the format while celebrating the history of the game's multiverse. The card depicts a pivotal moment in the lore of the plane of Innistrad, illustrating the archangel Avacyn's emergence from the Helvault, an act of salvation for the plane's humans against the threat of darkness.
The artwork for this card was created by Volkan Baga, a long-standing contributor to the game known for his high-fantasy aesthetic and mastery of light. In this piece, Baga was tasked with capturing the sheer scale and divine weight of Avacyn's creation. The illustration emphasizes her ethereal, radiant presence, intended to evoke a sense of relief and hope within the established grim gothic-horror aesthetic of the Innistrad setting.
