Where it came from
The Covert Blue Mage, identified as RU03c, belongs to a series of experimental promotional trading cards distributed during a limited-run event. These cards were commissioned to build intrigue for a fledgling tabletop gaming property, utilizing an aesthetic of minimalist, high-contrast illustration to differentiate the brand from the more ornate fantasy styles dominant in the marketplace at the time.
The character design reflects a deliberate shift toward occult-inspired cyberpunk, emphasizing hidden identity and arcane mystery. While the specific illustrator remains uncredited due to the decentralized nature of the event’s marketing materials, the design was noted by collectors for its clever use of negative space and metallic foil accents, which were considered technically ambitious for a promotional release of this scale.
