The Dawning Archaic // The Dawning Archaic

The Dawning Archaic is part of the Secrets of Strixhaven Art Series, a collection of cards released alongside the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These cards were introduced to highlight the intricate, specialized illustrations commissioned for the set, serving as a dedicated showcase for the visual identity of the game’s fantasy university. They were primarily distributed in collector booster packs, aiming to provide players and enthusiasts with a high-quality physical memento of the expansion's artistic world-building.

The artwork for this piece was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a distinct, ethereal style to capture the ancient, celestial essence of the Strixhaven setting. The design intent was to evoke a sense of deep history and arcane wisdom, separating the illustration from the functional gameplay mechanics found on standard cards. Upon its release, the series was well received by collectors who appreciated the focus on the aesthetic craftsmanship that defines the visual appeal of modern trading card games.
