Where it came from
The Elder Dragon War was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United set for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a pivotal historical event in the lore of the plane of Dominaria, specifically the ancient conflict between the Elder Dragons that shaped the world's early geography and magical landscape. As a Saga enchantment, the design is intended to narratively unfold over three turns, visually and mechanically depicting the dragons' initial descent, the ensuing devastation, and the eventual remnants of their battle.
The illustration was crafted by artist Nils Hamm, whose distinctive, atmospheric style brings a sense of mythic scale to the scene. The card was designed to function as both a board-clearing tool and a utility piece, reflecting the chaotic nature of dragon warfare within the game's mechanics. Upon its release, it was noted for its thematic resonance with long-time players who appreciate the deep lore integration that characterizes the Dominaria sets.
