Where it came from
The Elder Dragon War was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It is a Saga enchantment that mechanically depicts the cataclysmic conflict between the elder dragons—specifically Nicol Bolas, Chromium Rhuell, Palladia-Mors, Arcades Sabboth, and Vaevictis Asmadi—during the early history of the Dominaria plane. The card was designed to evoke the scale of these ancient mythological figures, utilizing the Saga mechanic to progress through distinct narrative beats of the battle.
The illustration for this specific promotional version was created by artist Johannes Voss. Known for his ethereal and high-fantasy aesthetic, Voss aimed to capture the kinetic energy and destructive scope of dragon fire and draconic warfare. Within the community, the card is recognized for its thematic resonance with the game's deep lore and for its utility in gameplay, specifically for its ability to clear the board of smaller creatures and create dragon tokens as the story concludes.
