Where it came from
The Fallen is a card from The Dark, the fifth expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, released in August 1994. The set was conceived as a thematic exploration of darker fantasy tropes, shifting away from the high-fantasy aesthetic of the core set toward a gothic and horror-inspired atmosphere. This card, a black-mana creature, was intended to evoke the unsettling, ephemeral nature of restless spirits within that gloomy setting.
The artwork for The Fallen was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prolific early contributor to the game known for his intricate, decorative style. Hoover’s design leans into the ethereal and somewhat grotesque aesthetic defining the set, portraying the entity with a sense of fluid, haunting movement. Upon release, while it did not become a competitive staple, it was well-regarded among players for its flavor and its distinctive contribution to the visual language of 1990s fantasy gaming.
