Where it came from
The First Sliver was introduced in the 2019 Modern Horizons set, a release designed to bring powerful new cards directly to the Modern format without them having to pass through Standard. As the progenitors of the hive-mind race, Slivers had not seen a major design update in several years, and this card was crafted to serve as a high-end, legendary centerpiece that rewarded players for committing to the archetype's signature tribal synergy through the cascade mechanic.
The card’s illustration was created by fantasy artist R.K. Post, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. Post leaned into the visceral, alien anatomy that defined the original Sliver design language, utilizing a color palette and scale intended to evoke the terrifying, adaptive nature of the creature.
