Where it came from
Sisay, Weatherlight Captain was introduced in the 2019 Modern Horizons set, a unique expansion designed specifically for the Modern format that bypassed standard set rotation by introducing cards directly to the card pool. The character represents the legendary captain of the Weatherlight as she appears in her evolved form, drawing upon the long-running narrative of the Weatherlight Saga. The card was crafted to serve as a versatile commander in the Commander format, rewarding players for assembling a colorful array of legendary permanents.
The card’s illustration was rendered by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her evocative character portraits. Villeneuve sought to depict Sisay as a powerful, poised leader, emphasizing her connection to the ship's legacy through her regal stance and intricate attire. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its flexible, toolbox-style ability, which allows for consistent tutoring of legendary cards, cementing its status as a staple for multicolored commander decks.
