Where it came from
The Immortal Sun was originally released in the 2018 set Rivals of Ixalan, representing a powerful artifact central to the narrative arc of the Ixalan block. Within the game's lore, it is an ancient device of immense power capable of trapping planeswalkers, acting as the primary catalyst for the conflict between various factions seeking to claim the golden city of Orazca. Its inclusion in the 2023 Commander Masters set, specifically as card number 393, serves as a thematic reprint that honors its status as a staple for deck building in the Commander format.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who captured the artifact's overwhelming, radiant presence through a distinct high-fantasy aesthetic. The design emphasizes its ability to suppress the powers of planeswalkers and draw cards, mechanical features that reflect its overwhelming influence in the game's story. Upon its initial release and subsequent reprints, it has been widely recognized by players for its significant impact on board states, cementing its reputation as a potent and iconic inclusion in artifact-focused strategies.
