What it does

When you planeswalk to The Maelstrom and at the beginning of your upkeep, you may reveal the top card of your library. If a permanent card is revealed this way, you may put it onto the battlefield. If you revealed a card but didn't put it onto the battlefield, put it on the bottom of your library.

Whenever chaos ensues, return target permanent card from your graveyard to the battlefield.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Maelstrom was released as part of the Planechase Anthology set in 2016, serving as a reprint of the iconic planar card originally debuted in the 2009 Planechase expansion. These cards were designed to introduce a chaotic, shifting environmental mechanic to Magic: The Gathering, simulating the unpredictable nature of traveling between the diverse realms of the multiverse. The Maelstrom specifically depicts the chaotic energy of the Blind Eternities, the space between planes, emphasizing the theme of cosmic instability.

The art for this piece was crafted by Dave Kendall, who sought to capture the turbulent, abstract nature of planar flux. Kendall’s work on the set is noted for its high-contrast, atmospheric style that diverges from traditional character-focused card art to prioritize the environmental lore of the game. Upon its release, the Planechase series was well-received by fans of multiplayer formats for its ability to reshape the board state unpredictably, and the Maelstrom remains a defining centerpiece of that mechanical identity.
