Where it came from
The Mana Rig was introduced as part of the Dominaria United Commander set, released in 2022 to coincide with the main expansion set of the same name. Designed as a high-mana artifact, it draws inspiration from the legendary Thran technology of Dominaria, which often features massive, construct-like machinery fueled by ancient power sources. This card serves as a thematic nod to the industrialized, gear-heavy aesthetic associated with the setting's historical artifacts.
The card was illustrated by Titus Lunter, a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering who often utilizes digital painting techniques to emphasize scale and light. In this piece, Lunter emphasizes the overwhelming size and intricate clockwork nature of the Rig to evoke a sense of mechanical grandeur. Within the Commander format, the card was received as a utility piece for decks capable of generating high amounts of mana, noted particularly for its ability to produce powerstone tokens.
