Where it came from
The Master, Formed Anew appears in the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond Doctor Who expansion released in 2023. This set was designed to integrate the rich history of the long-running television series into the mechanics of the card game, allowing players to utilize key characters and iconic moments from the show. The card specifically references the regeneration cycle of the Master, a core antagonist in the series, reflecting their ability to constantly reinvent their identity through various incarnations.
The card art was illustrated by Michele Giorgi, who focused on capturing the erratic and menacing essence of the character. The design team at Wizards of the Coast aimed to create a card that could mechanically represent the Master’s tendency to manipulate events and survive catastrophic encounters. Upon its release, the card was received as a versatile tool for Commander format players, particularly valued for its ability to create tokens and synergize with villain-themed decks.
