Where it came from
The Master, Formed Anew was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond Doctor Who set in October 2023. This card depicts the Master, a recurring antagonist in the long-running British science fiction series, specifically referencing the iteration played by Sacha Dhawan. The card was designed to mechanically represent the character's penchant for chaotic schemes and manipulation, utilizing the 'suspend' mechanic to reflect their tendency to plot in the background before emerging to disrupt the board state.
The artwork was commissioned from artist Justine Cruz, who aimed to capture the character's unsettling intensity and flair for theatrical villainy. The design process focused on integrating the character's established aesthetic from the Thirteenth Doctor's era with the established visual language of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its thematic accuracy to the source material and its effectiveness within the 'Masters of Evil' commander deck structure.
