The Master, Multiplied

The Master, Multiplied appeared as part of the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond Doctor Who Commander set, released in 2023. The card was designed to mechanically represent the character's penchant for regeneration and temporal manipulation, specifically referencing the various incarnations seen throughout the long-running British science fiction series. It functions by allowing the player to create token copies of the card, capturing the recurring and often chaotic nature of the villain in gameplay form.

The artwork was created by illustrator Anna Steinbauer, who utilized a stylistic approach that emphasizes the recurring, multiversal threat of the character. The card was received positively by players for its thematic accuracy, particularly its ability to synergize with the set's broader mechanics involving the Doctor and their companions. It stands as a notable example of how the design team translated complex narrative concepts into the rigid rule structure of Magic: The Gathering.
