Where it came from
The Phasing of Zhalfir was released as part of the Dominaria United set in 2022, functioning as a narrative card that depicts a pivotal moment in the history of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The card illustrates the lore-heavy event where the Teferi-led nation of Zhalfir was phased out of reality to protect it from the invading Phyrexians. This specific version is a promo printing, often distributed through official play channels to highlight the return of iconic characters and locations to the game's evolving storyline.
The artistic direction for this piece was handled by artist Johannes Voss, who utilized a ethereal, high-fantasy aesthetic to capture the transition of the nation into a different state of reality. The design emphasizes the sense of loss and displacement inherent in the event, focusing on the shimmering, translucent visual language of 'phasing.' Upon its release, the card was received well by players who appreciated the direct acknowledgment of deep-cut lore, as it provided a mechanical representation of a long-standing plot point that had defined the character of Teferi for decades.
